How to Change the Video Player Skin
DynTube offers multiple player skins to customize the appearance of your video player. Choose a skin that matches your website's design, branding, or content style to create a cohesive viewing experience. Everything described here lives on the Player Skin tab of a video's page in the dashboard.
Why Customize Your Player?
- Brand Consistency: Match your player to your website's color scheme and design aesthetic
- Professional Appearance: A customized player looks more polished than a generic one
- Reuse: A preset is defined once and applied to many videos, so a change to the preset reaches all of them
- Content Alignment: Choose a style that complements the type of content you're sharing
Before You Start
- Your account permission must include Manage Videos — assigning or clearing a video's preset requires that claim.
- To assign a preset, at least one active preset must exist. Presets are created under Settings → Player Presets (/player-presets).
- The Player Skin tab is available whatever the video's state, but the preview panel only plays once the video is published.
Opening the Player Skin Tab
- In the dashboard sidebar, open Video Library (/projects).
- Open the project that holds the video, then open the video itself. The video page is /videos/<VIDEO_ID>.
- Select the Player Skin tab.
Applying a Player Preset
- On the Player Skin tab, find the Player Preset card at the top.
- Open the dropdown. It lists your active presets; archived presets are not offered.
- Choose a preset. The change is saved as soon as you choose it — there is no separate save button on this card — and the tab reports "Player preset applied".
- The badge on the card changes to "Override: <preset name>", and the preview panel reloads.
If the card instead reads "No player presets created yet. Create presets in the Player Presets section to use them here.", follow the "Manage player presets" link at the bottom of the card to /player-presets, open the Your presets tab and create one first.
Clearing the Override and Inheriting Instead
A video does not have to carry its own preset. When no preset is set on the video, the card shows the badge "Using account or system default" and the player falls back through the chain below.
- Click "Reset to account default" beside the dropdown, or choose "Use account or system default" from the dropdown itself.
- The tab reports "Reset to inherited preset" and the badge returns to "Using account or system default".
How a Preset Is Resolved
For a direct embed — an iframe or embed key that is not part of a hosted site — DynTube resolves the preset key in this order, taking the first one that is set:
- the preset assigned to the video
- the preset assigned to the video's project
- the account's default preset, set per card on the Player Presets page
- the built-in default preset
A video on a hosted site resolves through the site and account chain as well, so a site can carry its own default. Beyond that ordering, no further precedence is documented here.
Legacy Appearance (Advanced)
Expand the "Legacy Appearance (Advanced)" card to reach the direct fields. While a preset is assigned, the card explains that the fields are read-only and asks you to remove the preset override above before editing them.
- Clear any preset override first, as described above.
- Expand "Legacy Appearance (Advanced)".
- Set Player Skin, Player Color and Controls Color. Leave a colour blank for the default; "Reset Colors" clears both at once.
- Click "Save Changes". The tab reports "Player appearance updated".
- Click "Reload Preview" to re-render the preview panel with the saved values.
Available Skins
The Player Skin dropdown offers seven names, but the current player maps them onto a smaller set of outcomes. Several names render identically today; the table states what each one actually produces so you can choose without guessing.
| Skin | Control layout | Big play button |
|---|---|---|
| Clear | Default control bar | Circle |
| Solid | Default control bar | Circle |
| Classic | Default control bar | Circle |
| Circle | Default control bar | Circle |
| Square | Default control bar | Rounded square |
| Round | Default control bar | Rounded square |
| Bar | Unified bar — the seek bar is integrated into a single control pill | Circle |
Older skin and play-button names that are no longer offered still resolve to a supported equivalent rather than failing, so existing embeds keep working.
Checking the Result
- The preview panel on the video page re-renders after a preset change and after "Reload Preview".
- For a published video, "Preview" opens a private, one-time link in a new tab. That link expires in five minutes and can only be used once.
Beyond Skins and Colours
Two further sections on the same tab carry optional refinements — Polish (typography pair, caption style, settings panel, big play button, motion level, chapter title cards, keyboard help overlay) and Design & Layout (design preset, chapter display, design token overrides). Every field there may be left unset, in which case the player applies its own default. Both sections are saved with their own buttons, separate from the preset card and from Legacy Appearance.
