Fitness
Workout video that plays where members actually train
A member is in a spare room with a phone propped on a shelf, on wifi that drops when the neighbour streams. Adaptive playback matters more here than anywhere else, because a stall in the middle of an interval ends the session and eventually the subscription.
Where the session actually happens
The problem
Why fitness video churns members
Workout video is watched in the worst conditions of any content category: a phone or tablet balanced somewhere, in a room at the edge of the wifi, by somebody who cannot stop and fiddle with the player because they are mid-set.
The consequence of a stall is not a bad viewing experience — it is an abandoned session. Two abandoned sessions and the member stops opening the app; a month later they cancel, and the churn gets attributed to programming rather than to playback.
The fix is unglamorous: a proper adaptive ladder so the stream drops a rung instead of stopping, and video hosted somewhere you control rather than a public platform that ends each class with a recommendation for somebody else’s.
The workflow
From a class recording to a member watching it
- 01
Organise the programme
- 02
Embed in your own member surface
- 03
Decide which system owns membership state
- 04
Test on the devices members really use
- 05
Review class engagement
The mechanisms
What matters technically for this audience
- Adaptive HLS ladderEvery viewer
- Uploads are transcoded into multiple renditions and the player switches mid-playback as the connection changes. For fitness this is the single most important property of the platform.
- Casting, where supportedConditional
- Chromecast and AirPlay are offered when enabled and when the member’s browser and device support them. The control appears when it can work and is absent when it cannot — plan for both.
- Origin-restricted playbackPer project
- Playback keys follow the allowed-domain list you configure, so with a non-empty list and the account-level key exemption off a class embed does not keep working if the page is copied elsewhere.
- Signed, expiring linksPer request
- Access with an end date, rather than a permanent URL that outlives a lapsed membership.
- Aggregate engagement reportingPopulation level
- Plays, watch seconds, completion and aggregate device views — the last of which is unusually useful here.
- Member-level viewing reportsPlus and larger plans
- Supply your own member ID in the embed to connect accepted playback events to that user for per-member viewing analysis.
Fit
Where this suits a fitness business
Best for — on-demand class libraries
A growing catalogue watched repeatedly on phones and tablets, where playback reliability is the retention lever.
Best for — studios adding a digital tier
In-person members get an at-home library on your own member site, behind the membership you already sell.
Best for — programme structure
Projects separate levels, programmes or brands so configuration does not have to be uniform.
Map the complete member journey
Connect the class library to the booking, facility and member systems that own those records. Member and subscription access paths are available; share the journey you need and get entitlement and workflow confirmed in writing before launch.
Test one class in the worst room you have
Upload a full-length session, embed it in your member area, and play it on a phone at the edge of your wifi. That single test predicts your churn better than any feature list.
