Comparison
The Wistia alternative when hosting is what you actually need
Wistia is a video marketing suite: forms, lead capture, CRM hand-off and webinars sit around the player. DynTube is the hosting and delivery layer underneath — protected, branded playback on your own pages, priced on stored library and monthly delivery. If you are paying marketing-suite prices to host video, the arithmetic below is worth two minutes.
What decides it
Four questions that settle Wistia against DynTube
Score your own case here, then read the published numbers underneath.
- Is the video a marketing instrument or a product asset?
- A gate on the video, a form in the player and a record in the CRM is a marketing product. Playing protected video reliably inside your own pages is a hosting product.
- On DynTube — DynTube is the hosting product, and priced like one: encrypted adaptive playback in your own layout, with the surrounding page and funnel entirely yours.
- What the bill is set on
- Seats and feature bundles move at a different rate to storage and viewing. Only one of them tracks the work being done.
- On DynTube — Two dimensions only — stored library and monthly delivery — no per-seat charges, and published per-terabyte rates above the bands.
- Protecting paid or private video
- A members area or paid course needs playback tied to your domains and links that stop working, not just an unlisted page.
- On DynTube — Encrypted on-demand delivery on every plan, playback keys restricted to your origin allowlist, signed private links you can rotate or revoke, and dynamic watermarking.
- Who drives it
- If your CMS, LMS or app needs to create and publish video on its own, that is an API decision rather than a dashboard one.
- On DynTube — REST API access on every published plan: resumable upload sessions, video and project management, captions, private links, webhooks with delivery retries, and analytics reports.
Side by side
Wistia and DynTube plans side by side
Wistia rows are read from its own pricing pages; DynTube rows come from our live plan catalogue. Billing cadence is stated beside every figure.
| Criterion | Criterion | Wistia | DynTube |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free tier | — | Free at USD 0 with 25 GB storage, one user and basic analytics.Official pricing | A free trial rather than a permanent free tier, so you can test a real library before choosing a band. |
| First paid plan | — | Business at USD 79 per month billed annually, with 250 GB storage and three users included.Official pricing | Starter at USD 24 per month billed monthly, with 300 GB storage and 1 TB monthly delivery for the whole account. |
| Monthly bandwidth | — | 200 GB on Free, 1 TB on Business and 2 TB on Enterprise.Plan details | 1 TB, 2 TB and 4 TB across Starter, Plus and Pro, with the custom estimator using USD 20 per terabyte delivered. |
| Team members | — | Three users on Business, then USD 25 per additional user, per month.Plan details | No per-seat charge on any plan, so a larger team never changes the price. |
| Upper tiers | — | Business + Lead gen at USD 329 per month; Enterprise is a custom quote from 1 TB storage.Plan details | Plus at USD 50 and Pro at USD 100 per month, then a build-your-own shape priced from the published per-terabyte rates. |
| Usage-priced option | — | A Developer plan: free to 25 GB storage and 200 GB bandwidth, then a USD 25 platform fee plus tiered storage and bandwidth usage.Plan details | The published estimator uses USD 23 per terabyte stored and USD 20 per terabyte delivered, so a custom shape can be priced before you talk to anyone. |
| Marketing tooling | — | Lead capture, CRM integrations, webinars and a recording studio are part of the product.Plan details | DynTube provides aggregate engagement reports and can connect playback to your own user IDs on Plus and larger plans. In-player forms, lead scoring and CRM hand-off stay in your own stack. |
| Protecting gated video | — | Viewer login protection and playback protection appear on the higher tiers.Plan details | Encrypted on-demand delivery on every plan, origin-restricted playback keys, signed expiring private links and dynamic watermarking. |

Where another platform may fit better
- Wistia’s marketing tooling is genuinely good, and there is no DynTube equivalent. If forms in the player, lead scoring and CRM hand-off are how your video earns its keep, buy Wistia.
- Wistia’s free tier is permanent at 25 GB. If you want to sit on a free plan indefinitely, that is a real advantage.
- DynTube can attribute viewing to a user ID that your application supplies on Plus and larger plans. It does not add in-player forms, automatic lead scoring or CRM hand-off around that data.
Worked example
The comparable plans, with the arithmetic
These two plans compare cleanly: bandwidth is matched at 1 TB a month and DynTube includes slightly more storage. That makes a savings figure honest rather than decorative.
Wistia Business is USD 79 a month billed annually, with 250 GB of storage, 1 TB of bandwidth and three users. DynTube Starter is USD 24 a month billed monthly, with 300 GB of storage, 1 TB of monthly delivery and no per-seat charges. That is USD 55 a month less: 79 minus 24 is 55, and 55 divided by 79 is 0.696 — about 70 per cent lower, with 50 GB more storage.
| Wistia Business | DynTube Starter | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | USD 79 / month, billed annually | USD 24 / month, billed monthly |
| Storage included | 250 GB | 300 GB |
| Monthly bandwidth | 1 TB | 1 TB |
| Users included | 3, then USD 25 each | No seat charge |
| Difference | — | About 70 per cent lower |
The gap widens with the team. Six people on Wistia Business is USD 79 plus three extra users at USD 25, or USD 154 a month. The same six people on DynTube Starter is still USD 24, because seats are not a billing dimension — 154 minus 24 is 130, and 130 divided by 154 is 0.844, so about 84 per cent lower.
- Assumption: matched on 1 TB of monthly bandwidth, the figure Wistia publishes for Business.
- Assumption: Wistia at its published annual-billing rate; DynTube at the catalogue monthly rate.
- Not counted: Wistia’s lead capture, CRM integrations, webinars and recording studio, which have no DynTube equivalent. If you use them, the plans are not substitutes and the percentage is beside the point.
- Your own figures decide it. Estimate storage and monthly delivery first, then price both.
Fit
Choosing between Wistia and DynTube
Stated in both directions, because the right answer depends on the job.
Choose DynTube — paid and private libraries
Course platforms, members areas and client portals where playback must be encrypted, restricted to your domains and shareable only through links you can expire.
Choose DynTube — a big library on a small budget
Storage and delivery are the only dimensions, so a large archive watched moderately lands in a low band instead of an enterprise conversation.
Choose DynTube — video driven by your own systems
Your CMS or LMS can upload, publish, caption and measure through the REST API, which is included on every published plan.
Choose Wistia — video as a demand engine
If forms in the player, lead scoring, CRM hand-off and webinars are the reason you host video, Wistia is built for that and DynTube is not.

Common questions
Questions people ask when leaving Wistia
Is DynTube a good alternative to Wistia?
Yes, if what you need from Wistia is hosting, protection and embedding. DynTube delivers encrypted adaptive playback inside your own pages, with playback keys restricted to the domains you allow, signed links you can revoke, dynamic watermarking and a REST API on every plan. If you rely on Wistia’s lead capture, CRM integrations or webinars, those are not part of DynTube and you should stay.
How much cheaper is DynTube than Wistia?
On the closest comparable plans, about 70 per cent. Wistia Business is USD 79 a month billed annually with 250 GB of storage and 1 TB of bandwidth; DynTube Starter is USD 24 a month billed monthly with 300 GB of storage and 1 TB of monthly delivery. With six people needing logins, Wistia is USD 154 a month against USD 24, which is about 84 per cent lower, because DynTube does not charge per user.
Does DynTube charge per user?
No. No published plan charges per seat. Price is set by stored library and monthly delivery only, so growing the team that manages video has no billing consequence.
Is there a limit on how many videos I can upload?
Plans are sized by storage and monthly delivery rather than by a video count, so what matters is total minutes stored and how much of it is watched. Estimate both with the bandwidth calculator and the band follows from the numbers.
Can DynTube protect paid course video?
Yes, in layers. Each HLS segment is encrypted as it is packaged, playback keys are only issued to the origins on your allowlist, private links are signed and can be expired, rotated or revoked, and dynamic watermarking attributes a copy that does escape. Someone permitted to watch can still record their screen, which is true of every platform.
Can I migrate from Wistia easily?
It is a page-by-page swap rather than a switch you flip. Export source files and caption tracks first, decide your origin allowlist and private-link rules, prove one real page, then replace the remaining embeds at your own pace. Uploads can be scripted through the REST API if the library is large.
Price it against your own two numbers
Estimate your stored library and a normal month of delivery, then read both catalogues against them. It takes a few minutes and it is the only comparison that decides anything.
