How to Edit Project Settings
Project settings decide how the content inside a project is processed, protected and played. You can change them at any time, but a project setting is not retroactive by default: most of it describes how future uploads will be handled, and this article is explicit about which is which.
Updated 30 August 2026
Before you start
- You need the Manage Projects permission. Read-only users get a permission notice instead of the form.
- Editing uses the same form as creating, so it will look familiar — the difference is that every tab is now available.
- A project’s type cannot be changed. Everything else on this page can.
- Project-level settings can affect a lot of content. Check whether a setting applies only to future uploads or also changes existing videos before saving.
Open the project form
- Open the Video Library from the dashboard sidebar, or the Audio Library for an audio project.
- Open the project you want to change.
- Choose Edit. The form opens at /projects/edit/ followed by the project id, on the Details tab.
The tabs you get
The tab set follows the project’s type, and some tabs additionally depend on your plan.
| Tab | Project type | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Details | Video and audio | Name, description, storage region, replication, parent project, and — for video — encoding, protection and MP4 output. |
| Player | Video | The player preset this project uses, and the appearance settings underneath it. |
| Video Options | Video | Default playback behaviour and security for every video in the project, plus bulk publish controls and subproject sync. |
| Transcoding | Video | Per-resolution video and audio bitrates. |
| AI Transcriptions | Video | Automatic transcription and translations for the project. Saving here needs an AI plan. |
| Audio | Audio | Audio defaults, artwork and the optional public feed for the project. |
Details
Details holds the project’s identity and, for a video project, the output settings each upload is processed with.
- Project Name and Description — free text, up to 100 and 500 characters.
- Project type — read-only, with the notice that it is set at creation and cannot be changed.
- Storage Region — chosen from the regions provisioned for your account and filtered by your plan. Changing it does not relocate content that is already stored; it is the destination for what comes next.
- Replication — extra regions to replicate to, offered on the standard plan type only.
- Parent project — makes this project a subproject. The picker only offers projects of the same type.
Below those, a video project shows Video encoding and delivery. Save Original Videos decides whether the file you uploaded is kept. Adaptive Streaming (HLS) produces the adaptive variants the player uses, with a CMAF option alongside it. Playback protection is a single project-wide policy that applies to every media kind the project produces. MP4 Output produces downloadable MP4 renditions, and appears only where your plan includes MP4 links.
Player
The Player tab starts with the Player Preset, not with individual colours. A preset applies skin, colours and player behaviour as one named set; the project either uses the site default or overrides it with a preset of its own, and the badge at the top tells you which. Presets themselves are managed separately, under player presets in your subscription settings.
- Pick a preset to override the site default for this project, or reset the choice to go back to inheriting it.
- The appearance settings below the preset are the older, direct controls. Treat the preset as the primary decision and these as the exception.
- The tab itself is plan-gated: where player customisation is not included, the tab shows a notice saying so instead of the controls.
- After saving player changes, reload the page before judging the result — the form says so itself.
Video Options
Video Options sets the default playback behaviour and security for every video in the project — the defaults a new video inherits rather than a rewrite of choices already made on individual videos. Some entries here depend on plan features; where a feature is not included, its control is not offered.
Two bulk tools live on this tab once the project exists.
- Publish controls — Publish All and Unpublish All change the status of every current video in the project. They only change status, they delete nothing, and they do not affect future uploads.
- Sync to Subprojects — copies this project’s settings down to its direct published subprojects. You choose which categories to copy: Player, Transcoding or AI. It overwrites the subprojects’ existing settings in those categories, it only reaches published subprojects, and region is a future-uploads-only change there as well.
Transcoding
Transcoding is where the per-resolution video and audio bitrates live. The tab carries the clearest statement of scope in the whole form: these settings apply to all videos uploaded in future, and existing videos are not affected. Nothing on this tab re-encodes content that is already in the project.
- Raise a bitrate for better quality at a larger file size; lower it for smaller files and less delivered data.
- A resolution is only produced where the source can support it. Asking for a resolution your master does not have does not create one.
- To apply a bitrate change to a video that already exists, upload it again after saving.
AI Transcriptions
A video project has an AI Transcriptions tab, which configures automatic transcription and translations for the project. It has its own Save AI Options button rather than sharing the header save, so use that button to store changes made here. Without an AI plan the tab still appears, but Save AI Options is disabled and the form says an AI plan is required.
Audio
An audio project has an Audio tab in place of the video tabs. It holds the project’s audio defaults and its optional public audio feed, including the audio project’s own retention setting — the audio equivalent of Save Original Videos, and a separate control from it.
Saving
| Action | What it does | Confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| Save Changes, in the page header | Saves and returns you to the project page. | “Project updated successfully”, or “Failed to save project” on failure. |
| Next Step / Previous Step | Saves the current tab, then moves to the next or previous one. | “Project settings saved.”, or “Failed to save changes” on failure. |
| Save AI Options, on the AI tab | Saves the AI settings only. | A confirmation that AI options were saved, or that saving them failed. |
| Cancel | Leaves without saving. | Nothing is stored. |
Moving between tabs saves as it goes, so a partly finished edit can still be stored. Treat the confirmation message as the proof: if you have not seen one, assume the change is unsaved.
Existing content versus future uploads
| Change | Existing videos | Future uploads |
|---|---|---|
| Save Original Videos, HLS, CMAF, MP4 output, playback protection | Not affected — each upload was processed with the settings in force at the time. | Applied. |
| Transcoding bitrates | Not affected. The tab says so. | Applied. |
| Storage Region | Content already stored stays where it is. | Applied. |
| Player preset and appearance | A project-level presentation choice rather than a per-upload one. Reload the page after saving before judging the result. | Applied. |
| Video Options defaults | These are the defaults a video inherits; settings already saved on a video remain that video’s. | Applied. |
| Publish All / Unpublish All | Changes the status of every current video. | Does not affect future uploads. |
If something is missing or will not save
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A tab you expected is absent | The tab set follows the project’s type — video tabs on a video project, the Audio tab on an audio project. | Check the type shown on the Details tab. It cannot be changed, so an audio project will never grow video tabs. |
| The Player tab shows a notice instead of controls | Player customisation is not included in your plan. | Upgrade the plan, or leave the project inheriting the site default. |
| There is no MP4 Output section | Your plan does not include MP4 links. | Nothing in the form can enable it while the plan lacks it. |
| Saving reports that a format is required | A video project was saved with both HLS and MP4 disabled. | Enable at least one of them. |
| A change to an existing video did not happen | The setting applies to future uploads, and that video was processed earlier. | Upload the video again after saving, or re-transcode it. |
| Player changes look unchanged | The page is still showing the pre-save state. | Reload the page after saving player changes. |
| The form is replaced by a permission notice | Your user does not hold the Manage Projects permission. | Ask an account administrator to grant it. |
