How to Sort Videos in a Channel
Sorting controls the order the videos inside a channel section are listed in. This guide covers where the control lives, which fields and directions are supported, and how to confirm the saved order on the live channel.
Before You Start
- The Manage Channels permission on your dashboard user. Without it the channel pages show "Channel editing restricted" and no save is accepted.
- A saved channel with at least one section. If you have not created one yet, follow How to Create Video Channels first.
Set the Sort Order
- Log in to your DynTube dashboard.
- In the sidebar, expand More tools and select Legacy Channels. This is the channel list at /channels.
- Select the channel you want to reorder. The editor opens at /channels/{id}/edit.
- Open the Advanced tab.
- Under Advanced Sections, select the header of the section you want to order so that it expands.
- Scroll to Results Settings within that section.
- Under Sort Order, choose a field from the first dropdown.
- Choose Descending or Ascending in the second dropdown. It stays disabled until a field is chosen, and defaults to Descending.
- Repeat for each section whose order you want to change.
- Select Save Changes at the top of the page.
Supported Sort Fields
| Option | Orders videos by |
|---|---|
| Default (Recently Added) | No explicit sort — choosing this clears any sort stored on the section |
| Relevance | The search score for the section's query |
| Video Title | The video title, alphabetically |
| Video Tags | The video's tags |
| Upload Date | When the video was created on your account |
| Duration | The length of the video |
| Bitrate | The bitrate of the video's rendered resolutions |
| Width | The pixel width of the original uploaded file |
| Height | The pixel height of the original uploaded file |
| Storage Region | The storage region the video lives in |
Supported Directions
| Direction | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Descending | Highest or latest value first — for example newest upload date first. This is the default. |
| Ascending | Lowest or earliest value first — for example A to Z by title. |
Save and Verify the Result
- Select Save Changes. A successful save shows "Channel updated successfully" and returns you to the channel list at /channels.
- Reopen the channel and check the Advanced tab: the section's Sort Order dropdowns should still hold the field and direction you chose.
- Open the Embed tab and select Open beside the Share URL, or use Copy live URL from the channel's row menu, to load the channel itself.
- Confirm the section lists its videos in the expected order. If the order looks unchanged, check that you edited the section you meant to — each section sorts independently.
Current Sorting Behavior
- One sort per section. The editor stores a single field and direction for each section; there is no secondary sort to break ties.
- Sorting applies within a section only. It does not change the order of the sections themselves — drag a section by its grip handle to move it.
- Choosing Default (Recently Added) removes the stored sort rather than setting a different one.
- Relevance sorts by the search score, so it only produces a meaningful order for a section whose source mode is Keywords. A section sourced from projects or from a hand-picked list has no keyword query to score against.
- A section in Manual source mode stores an explicit list of videos and stops being dynamic, so newly uploaded videos do not join it until you add them. To arrange videos by hand rather than by a field, use Custom Video Order in Your Channel.
- Sorting is not offered in the create page's Simple mode. Switch to Advanced Mode when creating, or save the channel first and set the sort order from the editor.
Troubleshooting
| Message | Cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Channel editing restricted | Your user does not have the Manage Channels permission | Ask an account owner to grant Manage Channels |
| You don't have permission to perform this action | The same permission is missing at save time | Ask an account owner to grant Manage Channels, then reload the page |
| Channel name is required | The channel's name was cleared before saving | Restore the channel name on the Settings tab, then save again |
| Failed to save channel | The save request did not succeed, so the sort order was not stored | Retry the save; if it keeps failing, contact support with the channel name |
| Failed to load channel | The channel could not be fetched for editing | Return to /channels and reopen the channel |
